13 May 2011

Man, the one time I really feel like blogging (hurrah for procrastinating on sleep... yeah, that's completely nonsensical since I adore sleep, but oh well), Blogger has to die. Of course. Thus, I am typing this thing in a note-program thing and I shall post it whenever I can. It is currently 12.12AM on Friday, May 13th (ooh, Friday the 13th. Spooky).

I realized that I haven't had a post about "normal" life in a long time. Mostly everything is about traveling and stuff, yeah? I guess part of the reason for this is because life gets pretty boring and typical once you've settled in somewhere. I can basically call Vienna my home now, and what do I do at home? Bum around and do whatever boring stuff I normally do. However, there are some major differences between bumming here and bumming at home (meaning home-home or school). Here, I can go outside and wander streets without people staring at me (wow, why is that person actually WALKING?! Who does that?! That is such an obsolete form of transportation, geez. They need to get a car) or go to a café and sit for many hours, which is precisely what I did yesterday. A friend and I ventured to Café Prückel and just sat there the whole afternoon. Café Prückel is a pretty famous café which was built in 1903. The atmosphere is quite nice and you see a bunch of people just chatting, reading a book/newspaper, or just doing some work. Also, the waiter-people are actually quite nice (Viennese cafés tend to have uptight/mean waiter-people). I actually managed to study a bit of my German vocabulary (evil, by the way... "in ununterbrochener Reihenfolge" = "...running." What?) while drinking (technically eating, I suppose) my delicious Eis-Kaffee (coffee with vanilla and coffee ice cream... heck yes) and Apfelstrudel. Yum.

I have a picture w/the Apfelstrudel, but this one is better.

Today, I woke up and went on Facebook (haha) where I read about some creeper that has been sneaking into rooms and ... stuff. Apparently some girls forgot to lock their door when they went to bed and one of them woke up to this creeper-man skulking by their beds in the darkness. That, my friends, is SCARY. The good thing is that the person did not go on a random shooting spree. Actually, at some point in the night (probably around 2AM), somebody opened the door to my room randomly, but then they left immediately before my roommate or I had the chance to look and see who it was. It's a good thing we were awake, I guess. Then again, if we had been sleeping, the door would have been locked so it wouldn't have mattered. Eh. Even so, I'm kind of paranoid.

After reading about the creeper, I basically tried to cram 167 of those phrase/word things into my head because we had a vocabulary test in German today. It was pretty evil because the test only had 20 word/phrase things... 20 out of 167?! Gyah. Oh well. I think it went alright because I only forgot half of one word and the teacher made it seem like the quiz/test would only help us (i.e., there was no actual grade. If you did well and are borderline on the final, then she'll bump up your grade). I might have interpreted what she said completely wrong though, because alas, my German still fails. Afterwards, I bought a noodle-box thing with duck (delicious. Noodle boxes = amazing) and went to Swedish class.

In Swedish class, we had a sub who was really, really nervous and kind of freaking out. Yeah... sadly, she actually made us do work instead of just going on and on about grammar, like my teacher normally does. We did some random worksheet and then she made us read this story thing. I was a bit scared because she was calling on random people to read sections and then TRANSLATE THEM. What the heck! There is no way in hell that I could have read the Swedish, translated it to English, and then translated that poor translation into GERMAN, when everyone else in the class is a native-German speaker. That would have just been ridiculously awkward. Luckily, she never called on me. Thank goodness for staring really hard at your desk and avoiding all eye contact.

This weekend, my roommate is in Munich for some beer festival, so I have the room to myself. I just cleaned everything because I get these random impulses to clean sometimes. Now the room is super organized and I don't want to touch anything, haha.

Yay, an organized desk! :D

Yep, so that's an overview of what I've been doing for the past 2 days. I can't remember what I did before that. Sad, I know. Well, wait. I did do something on Sunday, which I shall go write about RIGHT NOW! Yay.

interesting! seem like a very relaxing thing to just sit in a cafe all afternoon! Singapore is not exactly like that haha.

lol sometime I write stuff really late at night too and sacrifice sleep but o well it is alright once in a while. I agree with you though once you settle in a place everything gets really normalized! but somehow have to continue to find adventure in it I suppose.

O also I told u I met some austrian exchange student here right! They taught me this phrase sercus. I think that is how you spell it lol or maybe it is sarcus...

O also one of the girls had her mother send this really famous Austrian cracker called Manner Schnitten. i'm pretty sure u have tried it! do u like it?

Hahaha... good job avoiding the Swedish sub. Looks like you posted this the day of my chem final, heh. How far are you still from finals/end of classes?

Just wondering, is that a... large-headed cat figurine next to your three tubes of chapstick? (More precisely, next to what I think is mango Burt's Bees?) And I approve of the rose decor.

EIS-KAFFEE SOUNDS SO GOOD. and randomly walking and wandering around. such are the joys of city life.

Charlene -- Yeah, it's quite amazing, haha. I wish this was common place in American culture, but alas... nah, the people in the cafe would start freaking out and try to kick you out because they'd be losing potential customers. Sigh. Yeah, it's somewhat nice and it's easier to manage your thoughts at night because it's more calm... or something. "Servus"? Haha, that's the phrase I have on my header... :P. And yeah... Manner is all over the place here. It's the most Austrian thing (besides skiing) xD. It's not bad. I don't think it's particularly mind blowing though.

Amy -- Tack ;P. I have my last one June 10th or something. That week is just pretty bad in general (3 exams I think... I'm pretty sure the Swedish and German ones are going to own me). HAHA. It's not a cat! (How does it look like a cat??) It's a dodo. My friend, with whom I stayed with the Netherlands gave it to me (it's from Mauritius). And thank you. And you have a good eye for lip balm. I approve. IT IS DELICIOUS. And yes, indeed. City life... ahh. I will miss it.

Hmm, I've clearly read this post before... but not the last one... anyways. Hi again.
I've sat in the Starbucks in town before after school, not necessarily even buying anything, and sitting for hours doing homework. I've chatted before, too. But yeah, still different...
